NAFA–UNPAM National Association for Foreign Attorneys Join NAFA

NAFA membership

The professional association of lawyers trained outside the United States. When you join, you get a clear route toward practice here, and colleagues on the same path.

Who can join

NAFA was created for lawyers trained outside the United States, and it is open to those who study or work alongside them.

Foreign-trained lawyers

Practicing or retired. NAFA was created for them, and they are at the center of everything we do: if you hold a law degree from another country and want to practice, teach or work in the legal field in the United States, this is your association.

Law students

If you study law outside the United States and want to learn now about the path to practicing here.

Paralegals

Paralegals and legal assistants who work alongside lawyers, in the United States or in another country.

U.S.-licensed lawyers

Lawyers admitted in any state, especially those who work with colleagues or clients from other countries. Several of our courses are approved by The Florida Bar for CLE credit.

What your membership includes

It starts with a conversation about your case, not with one more form.

  1. Personal orientation

When you join, a 30-minute call with our team. We review your education and your situation and map out your route: in which state, by which path, and whether you should start with an evaluation of your credentials.

  2. A trial class

Attend one live class of one of our ongoing courses for free, in the virtual classroom, and see how we teach before you enroll in a course.

  3. Member price on courses

Each individual course costs you less than the public price, live or recorded.

  4. The NAFA bulletin

Every month, in your inbox: the rule changes that affect foreign-trained lawyers, NAFA news and the dates of courses and events.

  5. Membership certificate

A digital certificate of your membership in NAFA, the National Association for Foreign Attorneys.

  6. Letter of recommendation

When you successfully complete a NAFA program, the association gives you a letter of recommendation to present to employers and institutions.

Mentoring: you don't walk the path alone

Membership puts you in touch with people who have already made the journey.

  • Your orientation with the NAFA team

When you join, we review your education with you and map out your route. It is the starting point for everything else.

  • Professors who have made the journey

Two of our professors were trained outside the United States and are now Foreign Legal Consultants certified in Florida. In class, they share their experience with you.

  • Colleagues from your country Coming soon

Members from your country who have already made the journey tell you how they did it: the documents, the timelines and what they learned.

Frequently asked questions

Are there scholarships?

Yes. UNPAM offers scholarships of $2,000 to $6,000 for the full program (homologación y reválida) to members who demonstrate financial need. See the scholarships (in Spanish)

Does membership give me a license to practice?

No. NAFA is a professional association: it prepares and supports you, but only each state's supreme court and bar can grant a license to practice law.

Do I have to be a member to request a credential evaluation?

To request one, no: anyone can apply for an evaluation. To continue with NAFA after the evaluation, yes, you need to be a member. And if you are not sure yet whether an evaluation makes sense for you, the membership orientation will tell you.

Do I have to be a member to take a course?

For an individual course, no: it is open to everyone at the public price, and members pay less. The full program (homologación y reválida) is for members. Enroll in a course (in Spanish)

Do I have to live in the United States?

No. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen or resident to be a member, and our classes are online.

Can I join if I no longer practice, or if I am still studying?

Yes. We welcome practicing and retired lawyers, and law students at universities outside the United States.

I am licensed in the United States. Can I be a member?

Yes. Lawyers admitted in any state are welcome, and their experience is very valuable to colleagues who are starting out here.
